As the world turns its attention to the UN global climate summit beginning on Monday in Copenhagen, Denmark, it isn't just diplomats, world leaders, scientists, activists and members of the media that are gearing up for the two-week event. Industry associations, trade groups, labor organizations and corporations will all have delegations attending the COP-15 meetings, panels, work sessions and parties. One company that will likely have its presence felt--or at the very least, have its presence seen spinning on the horizon--in Copenhagen will undoubtedly be Danish wind energy giant Vestas Wind Systems (VWSYF.PK).
But Vestas also understands they will not be in Copenhagen to do the bidding. "We try to be invisible," Michael Holm of Vestas Wind told me via telephone from Denmark last week.
Holm, Manager of Group Communications at Vestas Wind Systems A/S, said the company was not pushing any specific targets, but that they were hopeful the negotiators would "Listen to the scientists and agree to aggressive, ambitious and long-term targets." Holm added that clear targets need to be set for businesses so they can begin the necessary planning to make those targets.
"If we aim for less, we will reach less," said Holm. "That is how the world is designed."
Stay tuned to E&I and ecopolitology over the coming days and weeks for much more on what's new with Vestas as well as updates from the COP-15 climate summit in Copenhagen.
