London's first living painting goes on display outside the National Gallery. Sponsored by GE, the living plant wall is a representation of Vincent Van Gogh's "A Wheatfield, with Cypresses", part of the National Gallery's Collection, and will be on display in Trafalgar Square until October 2011. Created by the specialist horticultural company, ANS, the living wall uses 8000 plants, with each plant hand-picked for its colour and texture to recreate Van Gogh's masterpiece. A built-in irrigation system will water the plants automatically at regular intervals and teams of gardeners will carry out fortnightly maintenance throughout the summer.
