Beating out a group of hybrid and electric cars including the all-electric Nissan LEAF, the Ford Fiesta, and the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, the Chevy Volt has been named the 2011 Green Car of the Year by Green Car Journal.

On the same day that General Motors returned to the stock exchange with a much-ballyhooed IPO, and just days after the Chevy Volt was named the 2011 Motor Trend Car of the Year, GM announced that Chevrolet is making a $40 million investment in clean energy and community sustainability projects.
